This is a group of special people, they sell their property, set out from their hometown, spend months or even years of time, eat and sleep in the open, throw themselves to the ground, step by step measure the earth, regardless of wind and snow, whether old, sick or dead, forward is their only belief, direct to their heart of the holy city – Lhasa, this is pilgrimage, prostrating to Lhasa.

Worship is the form and means of expression of Buddha and belief in the soul of tibetans. The simplest thoughts and deeds; Is life to think of and all of life; Is worth giving up all with a lifetime, several lifetime of time to do.

Anyone who goes to Tibet is amazed at the devotion of tibetans to the gods. Jokhang temple, jokhang temple, namco, route 318, qingzang line, generally along the river, hand wearing protective gear, knee pads, along the road, not afraid of thousands of difficulties, three steps a knock, until Lhasa dynasty Buddha. This kind of behavior in our tourists who see too many fake beggars, is even questioned as a show!

In order to express their devotion to the gods, more than 200 people from the village men and women, old and young set out from their hometown, climbing mountains, wading through water, camping, all the way such as ritual, pilgrimage to the holy place in the heart of Lhasa jokhang temple to participate in the shaga dawa festival of religious activities, the whole journey of 1488 kilometers. Villager ji village says, the whole journey takes about 3 months… Is this what you mean by a show?

Religious education has been taken up since childhood. The purpose of Tibetan pilgrims is not to seek health and safety, promotion and wealth, or even a long life, like people from the mainland. Because they believe in the afterlife, they regard the afterlife as important as this life, and their deeds in this life are for the afterlife.

A reporter asked a 20-year-old Tibetan girl,

“What are you prostrating yourself to ask for here? What does the heart desire?”

“The girl replied,” for the sake of six paths, all living beings can get happiness from suffering.”

The reporter asked, “not for yourself?”

The girl replied, “not for me.

The total number of devout tibetans can reach 100,000. If they keep doing it every day, one thousand a day, it will take nearly half a year.

Many tibetans live outside Lhasa because vow in front of the Buddha, they ruin, a three-step proffering flaming, upon all the way from hometown to Lhasa, jokhang temple, sometimes for several years or even 10 years, some of them in the harsh plateau climate, in the way, after kekexili when no man’s land, climb mount tunggula of high altitude died…

“Kowtowing to changtou” is one of the most sincere ways for Tibetan Buddhism believers to worship Buddha. Each time you get down, mark the ground with your hand, get up from behind and go to the mark and crawl again, and so on. Believers consider it pious to kowtow barefoot at least 100,000 times during a lifetime of practice.

There are three types of kowtow:

Long-distance: the journey is not far thousands of miles, lasted for several months after years, the wind, food and camping, persistent to the destination;

Short distance: several hours, half a day, such as around the temple, sacred mountain;

In place: everything else is the same, just not a step.

Herdsmen in Tibetan areas take it as their lifelong desire to visit potala palace and jokhang temple once in their life. They work hard, accumulate belongings, and bow their heads just for the faith in their hearts. These have become part of their life. People are very willing to help. In their eyes, people who can go to Lhasa are all great and proud.

Most of them, however, had dusty faces, a large visible callus on their foreheads, or a black scab from blood; The hair was matted and tangled; Some shoes still have a big opening in the front to expose the toes; The apron in front of some people has been patched, dirty. But there was respect in their shining, persistent eyes, and their calm, serene look. Every step they took was a prostrate worship, and the whole journey was measured by their bodies. Director lu chuan said: don’t look at the long head of dirty body, their hearts are the cleanest.

Why 100,000?

Tibetans say one hundred thousand long heads are enough to complete a good deed. The reason for the 100,000 long heads is that when master zongkhapa became a Buddha, there grew a bodhi tree with 100,000 leaves, and each leaf had a Buddha image on it, so they had to worship these 100,000 Buddha images. To avoid miscalculation, believers prostrated themselves with a string of buddhist beads, stones, barley and other objects to count. Knock this 100,000 long head, the young person wants to use time of 3 months, the old person wants to use more than half an year.

Go on the sichuan-tibet highway, you will always see a lot of pilgrims, they all the way hard, mudslides, landslides, avalanches, will meet. Before the transportation is very inconvenient, medical science is not developed, prostrating people sick can only endure, die on the pilgrimage road is not uncommon, but the pilgrims look very light: die on the road is the Buddha to accept them, is also a very honored thing.

Tibetan pilgrims, just keep going… Sichuan Tibetan line all the way pilgrim, will only touch your soul.
