If you walk along the sichuan-tibet line, you will often see Tibetan people making pilgrimages to Lhasa step by step, especially in the summer when there are a lot of devotees on the road.

Maybe you will be surprised by the way of prostrating your head, but I want to tell you that this is the way tibetans make pilgrimages. Maybe some people spend their whole lives just to accomplish this thing.

Why do tibetans kowtow?

Perhaps you know that kowtowing is related to the belief of tibetans, because kowtowing is one of the most sincere ways of worshiping the Buddha of Tibetan Buddhism. The kowtowed pilgrim is worshiping the “body” when he throws himself to the ground. At the same time, the mouth repeated mantra, is “language” worship; Constantly thinking about Buddha in the heart is for “meaning” worship, so the three have been well unified. Tibetans express their faith in this way.

The origin of long head

Nowadays, prostrating one’s head is not only a reflection of the belief of tibetans, but also a forerunner of tantric practitioners in Tibetan Buddhism. It takes more than two years to complete the practice, which includes the indispensable worship of a hundred thousand times.

What you may not know is that it is more closely related to the kowtow of the han people. Prostration is one of the most elaborate basic rites in Chinese feudal society. There are nine kinds of worship rites recorded in “zhou li • chun guan • da-zhu” : “one day the head is paid, two days the head is placed, and three days the head is empty… “, indicating that the ceremony was mature and widely promoted in the zhou dynasty.

But in the tang dynasty, tang dynasty and tubo intercommunication, accelerated the two excellent ethnic groups to learn from each other on a larger scale. Prostrating one’s head should be the continuation of “surrendering even more”. Under the influence of Buddhism, believers will elaborate their prostrations in order to demonstrate the piety of their faith, and bend their whole bodies to show their obedience. Gradually, this ritual was promoted in the religious field.

In fact, long head is also a technical work, small make up tell you, long head can be classified long-distance, short-distance, local three categories.

On the pilgrimage

Kowtowing on the spot is also a way to insist on kowtowing on the spot, either in front of their buddhist shrines, or in front of the main hall of a nearby temple, to a certain number, kowtowing on the spot. Perseverance, over time, the floor, rock was ground light can shine.

Short pilgrimage

Short – distance kowtow, generally around the temple, sacred mountain, holy lake, holy traces kowtow for a week, less than a few hours, more than ten days and half a month.

The long pilgrimage

The line is not far from thousands of miles, calendar menstrual years, wind food and sleep out, toward the line, crawl on sand, stone and snow, persistent ground to the destination

Devotees consider it pious to kowtow barefoot at least 100,000 times in their lifetime.

Even in the snow, still have to rely on their own faith to walk.

Children in Tibet have been living in a place of faith since they were young, and have been exposed to this kind of life.

I believe that one day you will go to Tibet. If you come across these pious Tibetan faces on the road, some of them may not have been home for years. Please give them more respect and comity. So that they can kowtow to themselves in this rare pure world, and guide their souls in search of their place.
